A Passage From Yidishe kinder
Excitement for the warm days of summer can often be found in the last pages of Yiddish educational books as the schoolyear drew to a close. In this excerpt from the 1971 edition of Yidishe kinder alef—part of a series published by the Education Department of the Workers Circle—students Motele, Serele, and Berele discuss their plans for the summer, and ask their teacher what he will do. אין די שײנע װאַרעמע טעג
יוסף מלאָטעקמאָטעלע זאָגט׃
– זומער בין איך אין קעמפּ.
סערעלע זאָגט׃
– איך בין ניט אין קעמפּ,
מײַן משפּחה האָט אַ זומער־הױז.
און בערעלע זאָגט׃
– איך בין זומער בײַ מײַן פֿעטער אין קאַנאַדע.
פֿרעגט גיטעלע׃
– װאָס טוט דער לערער זומער?
ענטפֿערט דער לערער׃
– זומער האָב איך ליב צו שװימען. זומער האָב איך ליב צו ליגן אױף דער זון.
זומער האָב איך ליב צו רוען.
זאָגט מאָטעלע׃
– װער עס לערנט מיט אונדז אַ גאַנץ יאָר דאַרף טאַקע רוען.
