Books for New ReadersEndowment Goal: $5,550,000 Though we’re a small organization, we have a colossal responsibility: to safeguard the world’s largest collection of Jewish books and to find new ways to make this remarkable literature available to all. To meet this historic challenge, we are creating three discrete funds: The Virtual Yiddish Library is our response to the worldwide demand for Yiddish books. Building on the success of our Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library, we will provide free, online access to thousands of out-of-print Yiddish novels, plays, poetry, memoirs, essays, histories and more, effectively placing a complete Yiddish library at the fingertips of students, scholars and readers everywhere. Yiddish Library Fund. Back when Yiddish titles were still in print, few libraries bothered to collect them. Today, these books are considered essential for serious research in Jewish history, literature, ethnography, Zionism, labor history and Holocaust studies. Our grants, awarded on a competitive basis, will help the world’s great libraries establish or augment critically important Yiddish collections. Yiddish Book Scholarships for Students. Even in the computer age, there is no substitute for the convenience and pleasure of books. Our Book Scholarship Fund will offer one-time grants of up to $500 each to deserving undergraduate and graduate students for the purchase of Yiddish books for classroom study and research.
